It’s no wonder I have buyers now scrambling to figure out where their children will be attending school in the fall of 2015 given Stafford County’s efforts to help alleviate overcrowding by redrawing the attendance zones for up to 15 elementary and middle schools.
As a consequence of the tremendous growth the county has seen over the past decade, it is predictable the schools are facing overcrowding. According to Stafford County Public School records, student attendance has grown nearly 29% since 2000 to over 27,000 students in 2014.
While redistricting is an important and necessary strategy for any county’s comprehensive planning, it still makes it remarkably unsettling and troubling for families who have concerns about how their children will adapt to a new school. Worries about longer bus rides, increased traffic, and probably most important, a transfer to a school that has a poorer performance than the school the child is transferring from are all valid concerns.
The Stafford County School Board had met on January 12, 2015 to hear committee recommendations and now the public will have an opportunity to share their concerns at several public meetings set for January.
The schedule for these public meetings beginning tomorrow, January 14, 2015, may be found at this link.
